Unsentimental und humorvoll zeigt Lee, wie die scheinbar unauflösbaren Widersprüche zwischen der traditionellen chinesischen Gesellschaft und der modernen westlichen Welt innerhalb der Familie aufeinanderprallen.
Essen und Liebe sind die zentralen Themen dieser sinnenfroh inszenierten Familiengeschichte, die Alltag, Kochkunst und Kommunikationsprobleme eines verwitweten Meisterkochs und seiner drei erwachsenen Töchter im Taipeh der 90er Jahre beschreibt. Während die jungen Frauen mit unterschiedlichem Erfolg um ihr berufliches und amouröses Glück kämpfen, durchlebt der Vater eine Lebenskrise, die schließlich im Verlust seines Geschmackssinns gipfelt. Der sonntägliche Mittagstisch, um den sich die Familie zum vom Vater nach allen Regeln der Kunst zubereiteten Essen versammelt, wird dabei zunehmend zum Zwangsritual.
Virtuos inszenierte Kochsequenzen machen diese feinsinnige Beziehungsstudie zu einer gaumenkitzelnden Hommage an die taiwanesische Küche.
